Indian Railway: Aadhaar card will soon be mandatory for booking online tickets as railways is planning towards Aadhaar-based online ticketing system to curb touts from booking bulk tickets, end fraudulent bookings and prevent a case of impersonation.

From April 1, Aadhar card will be made mandatory for a senior citizen to get concessions in train tickets while three-month trial run for this is going on.

Besides Aadhaar-based ticketing system, Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu while unveiling the new business plan 2017-18 on Thursday, said “the railways will move towards cashless ticketing system by installing 6000point-of-scale machines and 1,000 automatic ticket vending machines across the country”

Railways also plans to  improve amenities and catering service

“Aadhaar number will be required for one-time registration at the IRCTC ticketing site. The step is aimed at eliminating touts from registering with fake identities,” a senior Railway Ministry official said, adding the Railways were preparing software for the purpose.

Despite taking several steps, touts corner bulk tickets and sell people at a higher price which is becoming a serious problem for the railways.

The news business plan also envisages launching of new tourist trains connecting hill stations and also boost passenger comfort, besides providing pleasurable journey experience through improved amenities and catering service.
