Congress’ eagerness is showing clearly to seal its victory in upcoming assembly polls in Punjab as the party has offered a post next to Captain as deputy chief minister to BJP rebel Navjot Sing Sidhu. Party understands having a popular face like Sidhu can help it in enjoying the victory in Punjab.
Sources close to the ex-cricketer, who left the BJP recently and formed his own party said that congress has said it is willing to consider the “number two post” if the party wins the polls. On the other hand, sources in congress also confirmed that the party has already taken the decision to offer an impetuous seat to the former cricketer.
Polls will decide the fortune of Captain
Interestingly, the offer doesn’t seem to have excited former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh though he had suggested that Sidhu merges his Awaaz-e-Punjab party with the Congress. The Punjab polls will decide the future of Congress, especially Capt Singh if Congress loses the party may replace the Punjab president.
The voice against captain has already risen when Congress lost Punjab during previous assembly election. Most of the party members were not pleased with him as he didn’t support them in the last assembly election campaign the way he does. So, the situation for Amarinder Singh is “do or die” and has to prove his leadership.
The thick voting competition between AAP and Congress
If talking about the opinion polls that show a slim lead for Congress over the Aam Aadmi Party, the end could seek a consolidation of the Anti-Akali Sikh vote by roping in Sidhu regardless his outspoken and somewhat unpredictable ways. Sidhu is also understood that he can enjoy the satisfactory votes of Hindu to his celebrity status.
Punjab represents the best prospect for Congress in the forthcoming elections compared to other states like Uttar Pradesh. The members will boost their morale if the party clearly wins in the State. According to the media reports, the former cricketers’ outfit was in talk with Congress with 13 of his supporters offered tickets.
