According to the scientists, the biggest alpine lake in North America is warming faster than ever due to changing global climate. According to the latest lake reports, the average water temperature in the lake is increased half a degree in one year, i.e. 15 times the long-term rate of warming. The changes in the lake are due to the human-caused global climate change, said by the Geoffrey Schladow of the University of California-Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center. The average temperature of the lake has reached 53.3 degrees Fahrenheit. The overall average water temperature is a about 43 degrees. The changes that took place in the Tahoe lake is due to the environment that surrounds it. The air temperature is getting warmer and the precipitation is coming in the form of snow. It will take a large amount of water if the depth of the lake reaches more than 1,600 feet. If the water will cover an area equal to the size of California then it would be 15 inches deep. According to the recent data of last year, only 6.5% of precipitation came in the form of snow. The average annual clarity has also decreased i.e. 4.8 feet to 73.1 feet The inflows comes in the form of rain which is warmer and leads to the conditions that warms the water of the lake.
Lake Tahoe is on Warming
The average low temperature of the lake is about 33 degrees according to the latest study. There was also decrease of .7 degrees from the last previous year. But still it is regarded as the fourth warmest lake. From 1910 the average number of days with an average temperature below freezing has decreased from about 80 to 60. The region of the lake Tahoe has slightly snowier-than-normal winter, according to the latest data. But the warming temperature will not change much as said by the Schladow. That why the year, 2016 is predicted as the most warmest year on record. These changes can contribute to mixing of water that takes place when cold inflows sink to the bottom of the lake and causes the water from the depths to move toward the surface. According to Schladow, the same changes have been noticed in every lake and reservoir in the entire west.
