Prior its match against Chile in the Cope America Finale, Argentina Football Association (AFA) has been overtaken by the FIFA’s emergency panel. FIFA has taken the controls as scandal charges were imposed on the AFA President, Luis Segura.
The Scandal-hit AFA
Luis Segura has been charged with fraudulent management related to Television broadcasting rights for the Euro games. A Normalisation Committee has been created by FIFA to investigate these irregularities worth millions of public money. Segura is charged with accepting millions over this TV broadcast right’s deal for the first and second division of matches in Euro 2016.
FIFA’s investigating committee consists seven members who are also going to overall the daily affairs of Argentina Football Association.
FIFA’s Interventions
Steps have been taken to repair AFA with Argentina FA secretary Damian Dupiellet is going to replace President Luis Segura. This scandal is also regarded as an acute governance and financial crisis for the country.
Damian Dupiellet will continue to run the functions until next Presidential elections for AFA. FIFA committee will overlook the daily affairs, revise AFA’s functions as per current FIFA norms and will also help the association organize their 2017 elections.
Lately, Argentinian star footballer Lionel Messi also shared his reaction to the issue on Instagram by pronouncing the AFA’s incident as a “disaster”. Argentina is due to play their finals of the Copa América Centenario against Chile tomorrow at the MetLife Stadium.
