E-Payment at petrol pumps: The petrol pumps across the country had earlier denied accepting payments through cards as a protest against the transaction fee charges by the banks. In a more recent decision, the banks have agreed to accept payments through debit and credit cards as of now.

The acceptance of debit and credit crads at the petrol pumps has been quite a relief for the customers in the current scenario of cash-crunch in the economy. In case the petrol pumps had not deferred to the need of the cutomers, it would have lead to great inconvenience to the Axis Bank, HDFC and other bank customers as these banks charge a transaction fee, as said by the All India Petrol Dealers Association Chief, Ajay Bansal.
The intervention by the government led the petrol pumps reverse their decison. As of now, the protest against the new transaction charges by banks has been delayed until January 13.
“We want to help the government in the digital and cashless drive. Our margins are already less. We want them to compensate us…All the banks which has come up with this 1% scheme… we won’t be able to operate their machines from midnight”, Ajay Bansal stated as he said that notices from Axis bank and HDFC bank had been received by them regarding the levy of the Merchant Discount rate (MDR).
In a recent statement the ICICI bank has said that it is not among the banks who are levying a transaction charge – “We are not charging any transaction fee on the card payment from tomorrow”, ICICI Spokesperson said.
Anurag Narain, Chief of Delhi Petrol Dealers’ Association said that tehy will meet Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Monday to discuss the matter.
