Supreme Court of India: The Supreme Court on Tuesday has ordered that people are not obliged to stand up for national anthem when it is played as part of a film or documentary. Earlier, the Apex Court had ordered that National Anthem must be played in all the cinema halls across the nation before the start of a movie. SC had announced the verdict on last year in November.

According to the verdict by Supreme Court, said it was mandatory to follow the protocol when the National Anthem is played or sung in cinema halls. The order declared that everyone in the cinema halls must rise at the time when National Anthem was playing and show respect towards it.
The court said while pronouncing the verdict that it was a time that the citizens of the country must realise they live in a nation and are duty bound to show respect to the National Anthem which is a symbol of the constitutional patriotism.

The order was passed by a division bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Amitava Roy on a writ petition filed under Article 32 of the Constitution. The court said, “You are Indians first,” further adding that all should stand up when the National Anthem is being played.
Later on, in December, the Apex Court issued a clarification on the exemption for all kinds disabled persons from standing while National Anthem is played in cinemas. The court also ordered the doors to be closed but not locked.
