India Wishes its Former PM Manmohan Singh A Happy Birthday

As the India’s former Prime Minister of the nation, Dr Manmohan Singh turns 83 today, the nation wishes him well on his day. PM Narendra Modi also sent him good wishes on his birthday. As it’s his special day today, we thought you might want to know a bit of intriguing facts about him, so here it is.

• He is a renowned Indian Economist who hails from Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan).  He, along with his family moved to India post partition. Dr Singh did his post graduation in economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh. He later moved to the UK to pursue Economics Tripos from the University of Cambridge and then he did D.Phil from Nuffield College, Oxford University. Throughout his academic career, Dr Singh remained an outstanding performer, securing top ranks.

In 1966, he started his professional career with the United Nations and later he held key positions such as advisor to the foreign ministry of trade, chief economic advisor to GOI, governor of RBI and finally the head of the planning commission.

• Later his political career started when he was appointed as the finance minister of India by the PV Narasimha Rao govt. in 1991. And then he was elected as the PM of India in 2004. He is also the first to be re -elected after the expiry of his tenure of five years as the PM. His name is taken among the most revered leaders (and of course) economists, of the nation.  
• In spite of Dr Singh’s tremendous knowledge of the subject of economics and having held the top positions in many of the prestigious organisations around the globe, he failed to win hearts with his work. The deteriorating performance of the Indian economy as an effect of the satanic recession is also blamed upon him.
• The work he did during his tenure as the PM couldn’t fetch him much praise, rather brought umpteen disapproval and a severe criticism from the opposition. His name is often linked with the 2G scam; however, Dr Singh denies any part in it.

But withstanding the pressure coming from all four directions, he did tremendous efforts to revive the economy of India.

It was because of the new economic reforms that he had introduced as a Finance Minister of India in 1991, that the nation got fresh air with eased norms and finally got a departure from the rigid rules and regulations relating the foreign trade.

Well, we can’t name a single political head that, in the history of Indian politics has been spared from the clutches “dirty politics”.

Well, guess that’s the reason it’s called as “dirty” and not “clean politics”.  Despite all these allegations, the people of India continue to love Dr Singh for his work and he’ll always be remembered as an enduring leader and economist.
