Albany, N.Y – On Wednesday, at the Veteran Affairs Hospital in Albany, a 31 years old nurse from the upstate New York sentenced to 6 years and ten months in prison after confessing he stole the pain medication meant for hospice patients.
According to the U.S Attorney’s Office, the accused is Nathan Baum residing at East Greenbush, Rensselaer County, was pleaded guilty in the month of the February to thieving the oxycodone in 2014, which is an addictive painkiller.
The prosecutor also added, Baum (the accused) removed oxycodone from at least twenty-five syringes and replaced it with an anti-psychotic medication called haloperidol that does not relieve pain.
The unlawful act of Baum came into light when his supervisor observed certain narcotic abuse symptoms in him, including, slurred speech along other symptoms.
During his sentence at Federal Court, there were some allegations from the family members of some of the hospice patients regarding the suffering and pain he inflicted on dying military veterans.
The Albany Times Union reported one of the hospice veteran patient’s Robert Yowell daughter (Mary Yowell) statement, in which she quoted, “It was tough watching my father die…however to have someone make agonise more than he adds to is pure evil”.
The offender also fined with $2,000 and directed to receive three years of probation of after his release from the six years & 10 months of incarceration.
