Cristiano Ronaldo Ballon d’Or Number 4 : The Winner 2016: Cristiano Ronaldo has won the coveted Ballon d’Or for the record fourth time in super style. First for his country, Portugal winning the Euro 2016, and his Club Real Madrid, taking the Champions League.
Cristiano Ronaldo Ballon d’Or : Ronaldo / Messi
Ronaldo is now one short of his Barcelona rival Lionel Messi’s record tally of five. He has now won the Ballon d’Or in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2016, with Messi the only other recipient of the award since winning it for the first time in 2009.
Messi finished second this time. Messi had also been in superb form, helping Barcelona win La Liga last season as well as scoring 50 goals in 50 games in 2016.
He also played in the Copa America for Argentina in the summer, scoring five goals, but missed a penalty in the final as Chile won the shootout 4-2.
He announced his international retirement following that defeat but reversed his decision in August.
Atlético Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann came third.
Cristiano Ronaldo Ballon d’Or : How It All Happened
Real Madrid beat Atlético in May to become European champions for a record 11th time, with Ronaldo playing a crucial role.
Two months later Portugal triumphed at Euro 2016 in France to lift a major trophy for the first time. He has scored 48 goals in 52 games for club and country in 2016. The 31-year-old had previously won the Ballon d’Or in 2014, when it had been merged with the Fifa World Player of the Year accolade.
Cristiano Ronaldo Ballon d’Or : Ronaldo After Winning
“A great honour to receive my fourth golden ball,” Ronaldo said upon receiving the award at the Bernabéu. “The emotion is like the first one. It’s the dream come true again. I never thought in my mind to win the golden ball four times so I’m so pleased and happy.
“I have the opportunity to thank all my team-mates, the national team, Real Madrid, all the people and players who helped me to win this individual award. So as you can imagine, I feel so proud and happy to receive this amazing and beautiful ball.”
Cristiano Ronaldo Ballon d’Or : The Selection
The Ballon d’Or is voted for by 173 journalists from around the world.
It has been awarded by France Football every year since 1956, but for the past six years it became the Fifa Ballon d’Or in association with world football’s governing body and was awarded to the world’s best player.
However, Fifa ended its association with the award in September.
Fifa will hand out its own prize for the world’s best men’s player, along with the best women’s player and team of the year, at the Best Fifa Football Awards ceremony in Zurich on 9 January.
