External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj announced the release of all Indian nationals from Kerala who were sent to jail by the African nation Togo. She also appreciated the efforts of the India mission in Accra and Consulate in Toge.

Sushma Swaraj expressed his gladness on twitter

EA Minister Sushma Swaraj expressed his happiness on twitter while saying that “We have secured the release of five Indians from Kerala jailed in Togo,” Sushma.

In 2016, Replying to a question in Rajya Sabha, then Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh said the Togolese court has been sent Indian nationals from Kerala to Jail and government was making efforts to ensure their release.

“They were arrested in July 2013 for their suspected involvement in a piracy attack off the coast of Togo,” he said.

The Indian Nationals are employees of a Merchant Navy firm, had set sail for South Africa in October 2013 from Mumbai. When they were returning in the month of July 2014 their ship got trapped in Nigeria and they had arrested for violating laws of international water, Singh had informed the parliament.
