More than 100 people injured and 125 people died during Indonesia soccer riot on October 2.
Malang, Indonesia: Stampede at soccer stadium in Indonesia killed 125 people in which more than 100 people are found to be injured according to Indonesia’s National Police Chief.
It was reported as world’s deadliest stadium disasters of all time as many people were found dead and injured after which police used tear gas to handle the situation at Indonesia soccer riot.
According to the sources supporters of Arema FC and Rival Persebaya Surabaya the two biggest team in soccer clased between each other as home team Arema FC was defeated 3-2 at a match in the city of Malang in East Java, police said.
According to East Java police chief Nico Afinta, supporters from the losing team “invaded” the pitch and police fired tear gas, triggering a fan crush that led to cases of suffocation.
He added Two police officers were also among the dead and he said that the crush occurred when fans fled for an exit gate.
According to Indonesian authorities more than 300 people were injured.
The governor of the East Java province stated where the incident occurred, said the death toll was at 131.
National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo clarified,’ the discrepancy of the previous higher numbers saying it was due to some casualties being recorded twice.’
During the Indonesia soccer riot, the Indonesian President Joko Widodo said,’I have specially requested the police chief to investigate and get to the bottom of this case,” and added “Sportsmanship, humanity and brotherhood should be upheld in Indonesia.”’
He also added “I regret this tragedy and hope that it will be the last to occur in Indonesian football. We cannot have anymore (of this) in the future.”
On social media many videos were shared about the insite of the staduim during late night.
In local news channels images of body bags were showed.
Indonesia Soccer Deaths
The Kanjuruhan Stadium in East Java is best known for soccer matches with capacity of 38,000 people .
According to ministry officials report 42000 tickets were booked for the soccer match to be held.
Indonesian authorities said,’ More than 300 people were injured’. and death poll could rise.
Indonesian Chief Security Minister Mahfud MD said in a post shared on his official social media accounts,’We had anticipated the (large) numbers and suggested that the game be held in the afternoon instead but it went on in the evening’.
He also added “filled beyond its maximum capacity”.
Also added “Our proposals were not met. I also would like to emphasize that supporters in the field were Arema FC’s.”
Following the controversy, The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) has canceled all the matches in the staduim in next week.
PSSI regrets the actions of Aremania supporters at the Kanjuruhan Stadium,” the association’s chairman, Mochamad Iriawan, said in a statement issued on Sunday.
Persebaya stated,’Persebaya’s big family expresses their deepest condolences for the loss of life after the Arema FC vs. Persebaya match. No life is worth football.’
Also added,’
“Alfatihah for the victims and may the family left behind be given fortitude.”
