On November 11 of each year, people all over India observe National Education Day. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India’s first education minister following independence, was born on this day. From August 15, 1947, to February 2, 1958, Azad was education minister, making numerous significant contributions to the country’s education development. To help you spread the joy of National Education Day 2022, here are some of the National Education Day Poems and wishes.
- Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College by Thomas Gray
To each his suff’rings: all are men,
Condemn’d alike to groan,
The tender for another’s pain;
Th’ unfeeling for his own.
Yet ah! why should they know their fate?
Since sorrow never comes too late,
And happiness too swiftly flies.
Thought would destroy their paradise.
No more; where ignorance is bliss,
’Tis folly to be wise …
- The Village Schoolmaster by Oliver Goldsmith
The village all declar’d how much he knew;
’Twas certain he could write, and cipher too:
Lands he could measure, terms and tides presage,

And still they gaz’d and still the wonder grew,
That one small head could carry all he knew …

The Mold-life — all forgotten — now —
In Extasy — and Dell —

The little ones spend the day
In sighing and dismay.
Ah then at times I drooping sit,
And spend many an anxious hour;
Nor in my book can I take delight,
Nor sit in learning’s bower,
Worn through with dreary shower …
- ‘Residence at Cambridge’ by William Wordsworth
My spirit was up, my thoughts were full of hope;
Some friends I had, acquaintances who there
Seemed friends, poor simple school-boys, now hung round
With honour and importance: in a world
Of welcome faces up and down I roved;
Questions, directions, warnings and advice,
Flowed in upon me, from all sides; fresh day
Of pride and pleasure! to myself I seemed
A man of business and expense, and went
From shop to shop about my own affairs,
To Tutor or to Tailor, as befell,
From street to street with loose and careless mind …
