Convert PIO Cards to OCI Cards: For applying conversion of Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) cards, Centre Government has extended its deadline till 30 June 2017. On Pravasi Bhartiya Divas convention in Bengaluru, PM Modi said that we have extended the deadline for PIO card conversion to OCI from 31 December to 30 June 2017 without any penalty.
PM Modi said that the government is working to put in place procedures for making descendants of the contract labour living in Fiji and other countries eligible for OCI cards. The government is starting with Mauritius working to put in place procedures so that descendants of Girmitiyas could become eligible for OCI Cards.

We are committed to addressing similar difficulties of PIOs in Guyana, Suriname, Reunion Island, Fiji, and other Caribbean States. He said Girmityaas ar descendants of contract Indian Labourers who were brought to Fiji to work on a sugarcane plantation in the mid-1800s.
Saying again about the decision of the government to extend the deadline for these cards conversion from 31 December 2016 to 30 June 2017, without penalty, Modi has also urged the people of India origin to convert their cards into Overseas Citizen of India cards.
He further said that it has started with Delhi and Bengaluru from 1st January where we have set up special counters at immigration points for OCI cardholders. We want it to become a symbol of achievements, ambition of the global migration.
Government will launch programs for youth seeking job in aboard
According to PM Modi, NRIs and PIOs have made an amazing contribution to their chosen field. He further said they assist us to spread our values and culture wherever they go in the world. They are true role models for immigration from other backgrounds and countries. Modi said, the government soon will launch several schemes such as skill development programme, Pravasi Kaushal Vikas Yojna, for youth who are seeking employment overseas
