Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave for Chennai to pay homage to Jayalalithaa. PM Modi along with President Pranab Mukherjee and other national leaders will attend Amma’s funeral at 4.30 pm at Chennai’s Marina Beach. Beside PM and President, Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda , Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and a number of national leaders will reach Chennai later today for the state funeral of the iconic 68-year-old leader known as Amma.
Leaders pays homage to Jayalalitha at Parliament and adjourned Houses for a day
Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned after paying homage to the six-term Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. Common people, political leaders, and movie stars are arriving at her residence for paying their last respects to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa, who died last night on Monday due to a cardiac arrest.
Her body Placed at Rajaji Hall
Jayalalithaa passed away at last night in Chennai’s Apollo Hospital around 11.30pm. Her body was taken to her residence at Poes Garden early on Tuesday morning. Her tricolor wrapped body was shifted to Rajaji Hall after a performance of the last ceremonial rites as per the traditions for people to pay their last respects to the charismatic leader.
Centre declared one-day mourning
At the same time, Centre has declared one-day mourning. The national flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings throughout the day across the country.
Earlier at around 2 am, senior AIADMK leader and close to Jayalalitha O Panneerselvam took oath as the news Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. During a ceremony, he was carrying a photo of late Jayalalithaa in his pocket. The state funeral of Jayalalithaa will be held at Marina Beach at 4.30 pm near the memorial of the mentor MGR and Tamil Nadu’s iconic leader, Annadurai.
