Thane Fake call centers rob US citizens: Fake call centers operating in Thane have robbed Rs 500 crore from the US citizens. The scam was busted on Tuesday. Total 70 people have been arrested. And 630 have been booked from three fake call centers operating at the Mira Road, Thane.
While 72 people have been released since they had no connection with the scam.
The raid was conducted by a force of 200 men which included 40 officials.
These people had been posing themselves as the US tax officials and they had also threatened many US citizens to sue them for tax evasion. Till now, Rs 500 crore is the total disclosed amount that has been robbed from the US residents.
Param Bir Singh, Thane Police Commissioner said in a press conference today that the three call centers had been running illegally at three premises; Hari Om IT Park, Universal Outsourcing services and Oswal house, Mira Road.

“The callers told them (US citizens) that they were calling from Internal Revenue Service (IRS) office. They told them that he/she was a tax defaulter and that the money should be paid immediately. They threatened that action will be taken on them by police and Tax department.
The caller used to first demand around USD 10,000 and later settle for around USD five to three thousand and ask them to make the payment through pre-loaded cards. The accused made use of VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). The reference number and the registration number of the IRS officials of the US were brought in for the same purpose. Thus, in this manner they extorted money,”

It is said that the amount of robbery disclosed till now might just be the tip of the iceberg. As the further investigation is done, the figures might change. Singh said, that the employees were paid a salary of 10k to 30k monthly along with perks.
The US Federal authorities have asked for details regarding this matter. Param Bir Singh said that complete information will be given to the US authorities regarding the matter.
