Global Warming : The increase of Earth’s average surface temperature due to effect of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels or from deforestation, which trap heat that would otherwise escape from Earth. This is a type of greenhouse effect.
We humans are causing the worst effect by destroying what we can never create: Mother Earth. The increased volumes of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases released by the burning of fossil fuels, land clearing, agriculture, and other human activities, are believed to be the primary sources of the global warming and climate change that has occurred over the past 50 years.
Human beings have increased the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere by about thirty percent, which is an extremely significant increase, even on inter-glacial timescales. It is believed that human beings are responsible for this because the increase is almost perfectly correlated with increases in fossil fuel combustion, and also due other evidence, such as changes in the ratios of different carbon isotopes in atmospheric CO2 that are consistent with “anthropogenic” (human caused) emissions. The simple fact is, that under “business as usual” conditions, we’ll soon reach carbon dioxide concentrations that haven’t been seen on Earth in the last 50 million years.
Combustion of Fossil Fuels, for electricity generation, transportation, and heating, and also the manufacture of cement, all result in the total worldwide emission of about 22 billion tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere each year. About a third of this comes from electricity generation, and another third from transportation, and a third from all other sources.
Global Warming and Climate Change : The Beginning
Recent years have consistently been the warmest in hundreds and possibly thousands of years. A very discernible warming trend actually started in the 1900 period. It might seem a bit surprising that warming started as early as 1900.The reason is that the increase in carbon dioxide actually began in 1800, following the deforestation of much of Northeastern American and other forested parts of the world. The sharp upswing in emissions during the industrial revolution further added to this, leading to a significantly increased carbon dioxide level even by 1900.
Global Warming and Climate Change: What is Changing
- Rising Seas— inundation of fresh water marshlands, low-lying cities, and islands with seawater.
- Changes in rainfall patterns — droughts and fires in some areas, flooding in other areas.
- Increased likelihood of extreme events— such as flooding, hurricanes, etc.
- Melting of the ice caps — loss of habitat near the poles. Polar bears are now thought to be greatly endangered by the shortening of their feeding season due to dwindling ice packs.
- Melting glaciers – significant melting of old glaciers is already observed.
- Widespread vanishing of animal populations — following widespread habitat loss.
- Spread of disease — migration of diseases such as malaria to new, now warmer, regions.
- Bleaching of Coral Reefs due to warming seas and acidification due to carbonic acid formation — One third of coral reefs now appear to have been severely damaged by warming seas.
- Loss of Plankton due to warming seas — The enormous (900 mile long) Aleution island ecosystems of orcas (killer whales), sea lions, sea otters, sea urchins, kelp beds, and fish populations, appears to have collapsed due to loss of plankton, leading to loss of sea lions, leading orcas to eat too many sea otters, leading to urchin explosions, leading to loss of kelp beds and their associated fish populations.
Global Warming and Climate Change: Do Watch
Global Warming and Climate Change: End of The Human Race as Sixth Mass Extinction Predicted
As you can now understand what Global Warming is. What are the causes (we humans). And what kind of affect it has on our planet. Now one scientist has claimed which is indeed very alarming. According to Guy McPherson, a Biology Professor at the University of Arizona feels that suicidal nature of humankind, which is destroying its habitat and the world, is now staring at sixth mass extinction.
Guy believes that instead of worrying about the climate change one must try living with it till the inevitable end which could be anywhere between 10 years and 100 years..
The planet is heading for a temperature within the span which is the highest temperature experienced for the last 2 billion years. Prof McPherson says that instead of trying to fix the climate, humanity must focus on living while can. The learned Professor feels that hope is not a good idea and so is wishful thinking. He asks people to pursue their love, happiness or whatever they feel which makes them happy.
Global Warming and Climate Change: What We Can Do
Assuming sometime in the near future that with technology to our advantage we can somehow try and slow down the process of overheating the earth’s atmosphere. We might just narrowly miss the holocaust.
This is just a hypothesis, in reality and in real time we can stop being ignorant about what lies ahead of us and start doing whatever little we can to contribute towards healing our planet.
- Reduce waste, Reuse and Recycle
- Less use of Air-conditioners (AC’s) and plant drought-resistant trees and shrubs around your home and outdoor air conditioning unit.
- Change to LED Bulbs
- Drive Less, walk a bit more or cycle
- Buy Efficient Products that do not use much Energy
- Switch-off bulbs when not needed
- Plant a tree
- Install a solar heated system to provide hot water.
- Insulate your home, clean your air conditioning filters and install energy efficient shower heads.
- Purchase a fuel-efficient car (rated at 32 mpg or more) to replace your most frequently used automobile
