Experts are worried about the effect on UKs economy
Research has shown that the rise in temperatures which has been a result of global warming can have severe effect on the world’s economy. According to the United Nations latest research, it will cost $2 trillion by the year 2030. When temperature is rising, it only means that workers from poorest regions cannot perform their jobs.
The countries that can be affected due to heat wave
According to Tord Kjellstrom, who is a director of a trust based in Nelson, New Zealand, Asia will be particularly affected. Kjellstrom, who led the research part at the Health and Environment International Trust, calculated the projected GDP losses for more than 40 different countries. Most of these countries are based in Asia where global warming it going to affect badly.
Tord used computer simulations and environmental data when calculating the results. They have been published in the Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Health. “With heat stress, the intensity of the work cannot be maintained, which can immensely affect the output produced at the end of the day.”
He said to Bloomberg, “The speed of the work will be drastically reduced and there will be more rest and less work, in labor-intensive industries.” Tord also stressed, “Rich countries can adjust to the change in climatic conditions because they have the financial capabilities which can help them adapt to the climate change.”
- Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, China and India are going to expect the highest output losses due to the rising temperatures.
Richer countries which enjoy cool weather like the United Kingdom and Japan will not be affected on a drastic level like their Asian counterparts. Due to rising heat, Malaysia has changed the pattern of work for their workers to avoid the midday heat.
Though shifting work timings and making use of air conditioning, it is an expensive process and will make people less heat tolerant. China being the only exception for their workers, 190 countries has agreed to limit the global temperature increase.
- As of now, the United Kingdom is expected to have unexpected heat wave and already many office goers are pondering on the fact, whether they can leave home early when conditions get too hot.
The TUC (Trades Union Congress) is planning to implement rules not to have people working when temperatures are above 30degrees and get rules for those who are working outdoors like driving or manual work.
UK heat wave – Can you leave office if it gets too hot at work?
Unfortunately, that is not yet happened. It may happen sooner with the severe changes in climate. However, certain rules are coming up where you can leave your office, when the temperature is not normal or the air conditioning is not working, making you ability to work in there, uncomfortable.
