Amazon India shook the whole nation when they announced that they will hold their annual sales event – Great Indian Festival at the same time when Flipkart is hosting its Big Billion Day sale. This means we are going to witness a war between Amazon and Flipkart.
When are these sales events of Amazon and Flipkart?
Amazon on Thursday confirmed that The Great Indian Festival will be from October 1-5 which will be crossing paths with the Big Billion Day sale which is from October 2-6. It will be like the ‘Clash of the Titans’ of the electronic retailer world.
Amazon issued a statement which said that the Great Indian Festival will consist of offers on a wide range of products. This includes smartphones, tablets, laptops, PCs, musical instruments, stationery, books, baby products, clothing, accessories, shoes, cosmetics, pet products, gourmet foods as well as gardening accessories.
Seattle-based Amazon made a bold move to have its sales event at the same time as its Indian counterpart. This highlights the sheer amount of confidence that the company has in itself and its capacity to beat Flipkart. This new found confidence is not coming out of anywhere. It is directly associated with the fact that Amazon has had a higher sales volume than that of Flipkart since last two months, as stated by Livemint. The clash of Amazon and Flipkart has just begun.
A little more detail
Amit Agarwal, VP and Country Head for Amazon India said, “This year we recognize and celebrate the big-heartedness that underlies festivities and have themed the Great Indian Festival as Tyohar Bade Dilwala. We are delighted to celebrate this with our customers as much as with the entire ecosystem of our sellers, vendors and partners to bring festive cheer all over the country. These marathon 120 hours of the event mark our continuing commitment to work closely with our partners and together bring the biggest sale yet for our customers, with the best ever shopping experience powered by Prime.”
Earlier, Agarwal had said in an interview that they are not concerned about their rivals. They are just focusing on maximizing their own capabilities.
On the other hand, several other players like Snapdeal are also gearing up for the Diwali season sale. But they have not yet given out any details for the same.
Flipkart has also joined ranks with Apple for the sale of the iPhone 7s. It will help them a bit but that is after the sales event.
This Diwali, the stakes are actually very high for Flipkart. If they perform well, they might be in a position to improve their results. Otherwise, they might plunge to levels from where recovery might be next to impossible. Let us wait and see how this battle between Amazon and Flipkart turns out to be. But one thing is for sure, the consumers will be the direct beneficiary of this competition.
