We mentioned in an earlier post that Apple iPhone 6 16GB is now available at a discounted price of Rs.33,900.. A decent discount of Rs.3,000. To further sweeten the deal, there is an exchange offer under which you can knock off up to Rs.22,000. There is an additional 5% off for Axis Bank Buzz credit card users and a cashback of Rs.3000 for Citibank credit card users. All this might tempt you to think to get yourself a shiny new Apple iPhone 6. But should you really buy one now? I do not think so. And here are the reasons behind it. Yes, there are many. Let us get started:-

The Offer is Flawed

Yeah, that is right. The offer is flawed. To those of you are counting at the Exchange Offer to save some money to purchase this otherwise outdated phone, you might be in for a huge disappointment. If you have a phone that you purchase a year back for around Rs.15,000 or you have a 2-year-old phone that you purchased for Rs.25,000, chances are that it will not fetch you anything more than Rs.5000. Harsh, isn’t it? But that is how Flipkart values your old Android phones.

Now you must be thinking about the part where we said that you can avail Rs.22,000 off under exchange offer. That was not a lie but there is a catch. You can get that only if you already own an iPhone 6S and are willing to downgrade to iPhone 6. That really does not make a lot of sense and I don’t think anyone in their right sense of mind would want to do that. This pretty much renders the exchange offer useless.

Apple iPhone 6 16GB when people are already talking about iPhone 8 512GB?

Let’s face it, you are only considering this option because you are not willing to spend $649 (Rs.60,000) on the latest Apple iPhone 7 or its bigger and even more expensive sibling iPhone 7 Plus ($769 or Rs.72,000). People have already started talking about the iPhone 8 and how they want a 512GB variant with it. Read more about it here.

Here is what you should know, after 3-4 years of launch, Apple declares a phone ‘obsolete’. This means that it will stop repairing them or making spares for these phones. According to this, iPhone 6 has already lived more than half its life and is not getting any younger. In some time, it will start lagging as it will not be able to handle the upcoming iOS 10.2. This means that in the not so distant future, you will start regretting this decision.

The ‘Tragic Flaw’ in Apple iPhone 6 16GB variant

Last but not the least? Neah, I was saving the biggest one for last. This is perhaps the biggest reason why you should seriously reconsider your decision to purchase the Apple iPhone 6 16GB variant. The tragic flaw with the iPhone 6 16GB variant is the very size of this variant.

First things first, when you purchase an iPhone or iPad 16GB variant; the actual usable space that you get inside is 12.2GB. Now that might sound enough but actually, it is not. Once you start using it, you will keep a few songs, click some pictures, videos etc. Not to forget that iPhone 6 supports 4K video recording and please do not get me started on the space those videos occupy. All this makes the 16GB storage too small.

How many of you actually delete old text messages, WhatsApp conversations etc that you have? Not many, eh? All these things take up space, a lot of it. That is why you must have seen many of your friends with base iPhone variants always having memory issues. When the iOS 8 was rolled out, it had a very low adoption ratio. The reason behind this is that to install the update, you needed to have 5.8GB of free space on your device. This means that your phone should be literally half empty to install the update.

Apple iPhone 6 16GB
Apple iPhone 6 16GB and Apple iPhone 6 Plus 16GB variants have been discontinued by Apple. Not just these, the same have been discontinued in iPhone 6S and 6S Plus too.

People used to purchase the 16GB variant because of its lower price, not because they wanted only 16GB! This is why Apple itself has discontinued the 16GB variants. The latest iPhone 7 starts from 32GB. Even the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6 listed on the official website no longer show the 16GB variants. Flipkart too has only discounted the 16GB variant. The bigger variants are still listed at full price. This basically means that they are disposing off the last pieces and you’re thinking about buying a phone that its maker itself thinks is not a good idea.

Final verdict

All the above talk boils down to this. Should you purchase the Apple iPhone 6 16GB now? A big NO from my side. I will suggest to save some money (a lot of it) and go for the iPhone 7 128GB instead. It might sound crazy but you will thank me later.

However, if you have never used an iPhone and just to try one out for which you won’t have to spare a fortune, only then you can think of buying one. In fact, if that is the case, you can buy an Apple iPhone 6 16GB variant without a doubt. That is all for now. Stay tuned for more updates!
