We all know about Voldemort and the destruction, he brought in to the life of Harry Potter. He was the reason behind the death of our favorite character Dumbledore. Now, Fantastic Beast has already hit the theaters and it’s doing incredible business. It is just the beginning of the spin off series, and we came through the man who will bring the hell on Newt and his friends. Gellert Grindelwald existed even before the dark lord and he was one of the major rivals of Dumbledore. After digging through Gellert Grindelwald history, there are some key details about the first dark wizard.

At the age of 16, he was expelled from Durmstrang
Alright, you might be wondering about Durmstrang. Remember the boy’s school which participated at the competition in the movie Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire. The piece of information has been extracted from Rita Skeeter who once was a reporter in magic ministry. It is learnt that Gellert Grindelwald carved Deathly Hallows symbol on the school walls of Drumstrang. He used the force which was not allowed in school and Rita Skeeter also mentioned that, Grindelwald also did some twisted experiments.
Gellert Grindelwald and Dumbledore were friends for Couple of months
Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald, became friends when Gellert came to stay with his aunt Bathilda Bagshot. They both had frustration over the International Statue of Secrecy and they wanted that wizards should rule the muggles. Dumbledore described that their friendship remained for two months and he broke off after seeing Gellert Grindelwald’s insanity and cruel doings. He was sorry and blamed himself because; during those two months he neglected his brother Aberforth and his sister Ariana
He used Cruciatus Curse on Dumbledore’s brother
The rivalry between Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald started when Aberforth tried to stop his brother from travelling. Dumbledore had plans to search for Hallows with Grindelwald. His brother confronted him, Gellert got on to his face, leading to quarrel and Cruciatus curse on Aberforth. From there a fight broke out between the two which ended with the death of Dumbledore’s 14 year old sister.
Elder Wand and Grindelwald’s history
Through the archives of Harry Potter books, it came out that the famous Elder Wand got into the hands of Gellert Grindelwald after he met Dumbledore and we don’t know that during the events of Fantastic beasts and where to find them Grindelwald had that wand or not. We don’t know the exact events but Grindelwald acquired that wand from Gregorovitch. Dumbledore won that wand from Grindelwald in 1945.
Grindelwald knew who killed Dumbledore’s sister
The quarrel between Dumbledore, Aberforth and Gellert Grindelwald resulted in the death of Ariana, sister of Dumbledore. So Dumbledore knew that if he confronted Grindelwald again then he don’t want to listen that whether his spell killed their sister. He kept himself away from Gellert Grindelwald which made the dark wizard more powerful.
United Kingdom was free from Grindelwald’s terror
Rita Skeeter mentioned in one of her works that, Gellert Grindelwald never extended his reign of terror to Britain. To some extent its true, as Hogwarts flourished during those days. It is not learnt that why he didn’t created his dark reign in Britain. Moreover, it also doesn’t mean that, Gellert Grindelwald doesn’t use visit United Kingdom. He was clever man and might have kept a check on Dumbledore powers.
Army of Dead, what Grindelwald wanted?
Gellert Grindelwald was dark and insane. He wanted to rule the world by terror for which, he might wanted the resurrection stone to create an army of Inferi (magically reanimated corpses). It could be true as he always looked for the resurrection stone. The stone was said to be set in a ring and was kept in possession of Gaunt family until Tom Riddle took it. It means that Gellert Grindelwald always looked for it and may have found it in some way.
Confrontation between Dumbledore and Grindelwald was dreadful
J.K. Rowling reveals in a passage, that when Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall with whom, he shared a heart to heart bonding talked about Gellert. Dumbledore decided to face Grindelwald and defeat him. Dumbledore never wanted to share this piece of information with anyone. He wanted this feud to be low profile. So, he only shared the information with some friends that he would be facing his old ally who became his enemy.
Dumbledore Win over Grindelwald turned history
The win, which ended in the defeat of Gellert Grindelwald completely turned and history. It made Dumbledore one of the powerful and wisest wizards of all time. There is no doubt that the duel between two rivals turned the history of magic and the fight became the Dumbledore’s greatest achievement.
Grindelwald laughed and lied in face of Voldemort while dying
Grindelwald was old and defeated, but he was never afraid of Voldemort. So, when Voldemort confronted Gellert Grindelwald asking about the whereabouts of the wand. Grindelwald lied that he never had the wand and then he laughed in his face. His last words were, “Kill me, then!’ demanded the old man.’you will not win, you cannot win! That wand will never, ever be yours’.
In the movie Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows, there is a scene, but filmed differently. In the movie he hands over all the information, but in the book of J.K. Rowling, he never did. Apart from that, he didn’t betray Dumbledore. The scene in the movie shows when Voldemort opens the tomb of Dumbledore to extract the wand. In a way Gellert Grindelwald was different from Voldemort as he showed remorse on his wrong doings.
