3 June 2016: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Afghanistan for the second time after 6 months this Saturday. During this one day visit to Afghanistan, the inauguration of the India-Afghan friendship dam will take place in Herat district with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani.
The dam construction in western Herat district which is close to the border of Iran is one of the two largest projects that are being carried out in connection with India’s Development partnership with Afghanistan that worth more than $2 billion.
According to the source, the foreign ministry spokesman, Vikas Swarup told the reporters that, the completion of the dam took years which represents 1,500 Indian and Afghan engineers and other professionals worked hard in difficult conditions to meet the final culmination under the partnership between India and Afghanistan. It also highlights India’s continued commitment to Afghanistan’s reconstruction and development. He also further said that, the dam will help irrigate 44,000 hectares of land.
It is also learnt that, during this visit, PM Modi will organize a meeting with the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani to provide an opportunity to discuss the current situation in Afghanistan and how the two countries can cooperate further fro promoting peace and stability in that country, says the source.
In last year, PM Modi and President Ghani had jointly dedicated to the Afghan Nation the new parliament Building constructed under the India-Afghanistan development cooperation, as per the reports.
