Tipu Jayanti BJP: BJP has decided to oppose the celebration of the Tipu Jayanti. The Karnataka govt is all set to celebrate the birth anniversary of the “Tiger of Mysore” this year, while the opposition BJP will be holding a protest against the same on Nov 8.
TV Mohan Das Pai said that Karnataka celebrating Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary is like the centre celebrating Aurangzeb’s anniversary. It’s not only BJP but RSS too is opposing the Tipu Jayanti celebrations, although the state government remains unaffected and is continuing the preparations.
Tipu Jayanti BJP to oppose the event
He said that as a Konkani, he is upset over the fact that the birth anniversary of a bigot is being celebrated. Mohan Das also added that instead, the state should celebrate the birth anniversaries of great and benign personalities such as Wodeyars and Mysuru Diwan Islamil.
Mohan Das further called him a tyrant and said that he killed numerous innocent people and destroyed several Konkani temples in Karnataka. Tipu Sultan also used his coercive measures on the Christian community which lead them to live in hiding for some time.
Last year too, there was wide opposition from BJP, RSS and the Christian community which led nowhere and resulted in riots as the state govt was adamant on celebrating the Tipu Jayanti. The riots became so heated that two ended up losing their lives.
In some areas of Karnataka, the Congress leaders also are not supportive of the event celebrations. While the Christians in Karnataka have also decided to voice their opinion against the “oppressor’s” Birth Anniversary celebrations.
