One of the famous show listed on Netflix original list just got a bad news. Netflix original Marco Polo series is canceled. It proved to be a unique series from the very first episode. The series created a platform for many newcomers. Fans also welcomed many big stars on the small screen. Italian actor and lead actor Lorenzo Richelmy did a phenomenal job as Marco Polo. Moreover, some known faces featured like Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, Rick Yune, and etcetera. However, Netflix is having some other plans for the show.
Marco Polo series wanted to be hit like GOT
Netflix wanted the series to be another big hit like Game of Thrones. Besides this, they included Dan Minahan who directed a couple of episodes. Cost wise, per episode of Marco Polo series, estimated $9 million each. Though, there is everything in the show, the sets, designs, and costumes. Even the period of the renaissance is spectacular. But the second season negative reviews forced the shutdown of Marco Polo. It is known that Netflix losses are in millions.
Apparently, Marco Polo series found few audiences which were not going well with Netflix. Previously, the streaming giant called off Hemlock Grove and Bloodline, but after three seasons. The Weinstein Company produced the series along with Netflix. Both the companies lost almost $200 million. This intended the showrunners to drop the series for any further seasons.
What Netflix thinks about Marco Polo series?
While talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cindy Holland, Netflix’s VP, “We want to thank and is grateful to our partners on Marco Polo series. Actors, whose performances were enthralling and top-notch; to the committed producers, including John Fusco, Dan Minahan, Patrick MacManus, and their crew, who hearts were into the series; and of course Harvey Weinstein, David Glasser and our friends at The Weinstein Co, who were great collaborators from start to finish.”
The company was well aware of the fact that Marco Polo series is struggling. Series director John Fusco quite pleased with the show and Netflix. He said, “Netflix’s been great to give us the room to make a series with a cast true to every principle of diversity. It’s a bold network that allows you to do that and supported us in the way that Netflix did.”
Netflix may come back with a new series of Marco Polo style
Marco Polo series is well loved in the Asian region but not much in western. Even the Moroccan premier, awarded the series with the country’s highest award for showing Moroccan history. Fans embraced the fusion of martial arts mixed with the history of Marco Polo. Fusco is very happy with the cast and the crew. The filming was done in Malaysia. He further mentions that “he and Harvey Weinstein is working on a new idea in the same genre. Right now, there is no word about the plans.
