EC showcause notice to Sakshi Maharaj: The Election Commission issued a show cause notice to BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj for his remarks on Muslims saying they are the reason of booming population in the country.
EC has sent a show cause notice and sought a reply to Maharaj till Wednesday morning as to why no action should be taken against him.

Maharaj had indirectly targeted country’s Muslims for the population growth at a public meeting in Meerut.
“Population is increased by those who support the concept of four wives and 40 children. Strict laws are required in this country if we really want to curb population. Parties need to rise above politics and take decision for the sake of the country,” he was quoted as saying
On the other hand, BJP has distanced itself from its MP Sakshi’s remarks, saying neither the party nor the NDA government at the Center supported the view.

At the same time, Commission said prima facie he has violated model code which has been implemented just after an announcement of elections dates by EC on January in five poll-bound states. Sakshi also said that the money the money earned from cattle slaughter was being used to fund terrorism.
The inflammatory statement of Maharaj came after Supreme Court ruled that political parties and candidates can’t seek votes in the name of caste, religion just before of the first phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh on February 11.
