The 23-year-old brought the first-ever track and field medal to India in his first attempt in his first Olympics with an impeccable throw of 87.58m.
Born to Satish Kumar and Saroj Devi on 24 December 1997, in a village in Panipat district, Haryana. Graduated from Chandigarh and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts from Jalandhar, Punjab.
Dealing with an obese childhood, he escaped trolls made by local children. Lost kilos after his father enrolled him in a gymnasium in Panipat. Within a period of time, he visited the nearby Sports Authority of India centre and Javelin thrower Jaiveer Choudhary became aware of his early talent, who later became his coach.
Post training, his debut participation in International competitions began in 2013 and he won his first gold medal in 2016. As a result of his series of wins, he fetched 6 medals prior to Tokyo Olympics 2020. With his exceptional spirit, ending the 100-year-long-wait, he again became a gold medalist at Olympics 2020. Thereby, marking his medal count to 7, including 6 golds and 1 silver.
