Grammy award singer and professionally trained flautist Lizzo made the headlines when she played president James Madison’s 200-year-old crystal flute.
Washington: On Tuesday she played crystal flute at her concert “The Special Tour.” She is presently touring the US for her album “Special”.
On stage, she said, “It’s like playing out of a wine glass”. According to the Library of Congress, “a French fluter made the ornate instrument in 1813 specifically for President James Madison in honour of his second inauguration.”
Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden tweeted an invitation for Lizzo to visit the world’s largest flute collection, housed at the Library of Congress in D.C.
The Library of Congress stated that the flute was rarely played on special occasions during Madison’s time. The curator who is working there since 1993 never heard it played live. Lizzo is the first and the only person to play a centuries-old crystal flute.
She played a few notes and was seen shaking her lower body. The Grammy winner stated that “I just twerked and played James Madison’s flute from the 1800s!”.
When the concert started she was handed the crystal flute carefully by the authority of the library of congress. After the consort, it was taken by the US Capitol Police for a DNA test to make sure that no damage was made to the crystal flute.
