As the whole world is uniting for LGBT protection, North Carolina Government in a surprise move has passed a wide-ranging bill which bars transgenders to use public bathrooms and toilets that do not match their birth certificates. Gov. Pat McCrory signed the bill in a special session on March 23, 2016.
Republicans supported the bill during the session while Democrats walked out of the assembly showing their protest. Dane Blue, Senate Democratic leader later told that this bill is a direct affront to equality, civil rights and local autonomy.
Gay right activists panned the decision of the Government. They made it clear that this decision is blatantly discriminatory, and they called it one of the most extreme and pathetic bills of its kind in U.S.
Sarah Preston, acting executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina, told that this bill will play a crucial role in excluding transgender people from legal protections. She also made it clear that legislators have moved out of the way to marginalize transgenders from the general public.
Caitlyn Jenner, former Olympian who recently underwent gender transition too criticized this new bill. Jenner, through his official social media page, asked everyone to stand together for LGBT.
According to Legislators, implementing this bill is quite necessary to protect women and children from sexual predators who enter their toilet disguising as transgenders. Gov. Pat McCrory before signing the bill stated that allowing men to use women’s toilets is something unacceptable, and that is the main reason which compelled him to sign the bipartisan bill.
Tim Moore, North Carolina House Speaker, supported the bill, and he told that it will help to protect the privacy of people in a great extend. He added that the security risk caused by sexual predators could be easily overcome with the introduction of this bill.
