Assembly Elections 2017: The Election Commission on Wednesday has announced the dates for upcoming assembly elections in the five states- Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa and Uttarakhand. Addressing media person during a press conference in New Delhi, Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi announced the date for the five poll-bound states.
The model code of conduct has come into effect after the announcement of the polls date, restricting the state and the central government from announcing new schemes.
Goa and Punjab will have single-phase election on February 4, Uttarakhand will vote on February 15. Manipur will have two-phase election on March 4 and 8 while Uttar Pradesh will have seven –phase election on February 11, 15, 19, 23, 27, March 4 & 8.
Voting will take place in a single phase in Punjab, Goa and Uttarakhand, while Manipur will have 2 phases of voting, and Uttar Pradesh will have 7 phases of voting. Counting of votes for all states will happen on March 11.

- Nearly 160 Million voters will be participating in the polls: Election Commission
- There will be complete accountability of photo voter slips, colourful voter guides will be distributed to each family
- Electoral roll of Goa will be published on Jan 5, Manipur on Jan 12, Punjab Jan 5, Uttarakhand on Jan 10 and UP on Jan 12
- Height of voting compartments has been raised to 30 inch for secrecy
- Commission will introduce photo voter list. There will be complete accountability of distribution of photo voter list
- Nearly 100% voters have Electoral photo ID Card
- Every polling station will have 4 posters for voting procedure and dos and don’ts
- 85 lakh polling stations to be in operation for Assembly Elections to the five states
- ECI to distribute Voters’ Guide to facilitate voters; there will be voters Assistance booth manned by officials
- All women-managed polling stations would be set up
- Candidates will be required to affix photo on nomination papers, he will be required to mention that he is citizen of India
- Model code of conduct comes into immediate effect
