The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extended the last date to file income tax returns (ITR) for the financial year (FY) 2020-21 (AY 2021-22). The decision of ITR filing 2021 extension was taken in order to provide relief to taxpayers due to Covid pandemic.
The ITR filing date for FY 2020-21 has been extended to September 30, 2021, from the previous deadline of July 31, 2021.
However, this time the decision to extend the last date to file ITR beyond September 30 could be taken due to the technical faults in the new income tax website at www.incometax.gov.in. Consequently, unable to file returns, people raised their concern on social media. Thereby, the finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has given Infosys time till September 15 to fix all the problems.
To add to it, this ITR filing 2021 extension may extend in view of the challenges faced on the e-filing portal.
Latest tweet by MOF – “Ministry of Finance has sent an order to Sh Salil Parekh, MD &CEO @Infosys on 23/08/2021 to explain to hon’ble FM as to why even after 2.5 months since launch of new e-filing portal, technical failures in the portal have not been resolved. In fact, since 21/08/2021 the portal itself is not available”
