EllaOne is an emergency contraceptive tablet that reduces the risk of pregnancy after having unprotected sex. It has a creamy white color, round and curved design, and the word “Ella” is engraved on both sides.
There are only two legal morning after-pills in the market right now, Levonelle and EllaOne. They both are one-dose single tablets, but the advantage EllaOne has over Levonelle is it has a longer effective time period. EllaOne has a 5-day time period while Levonelle has a 3-day period.
EllaOne is effective up to 120 hours, that is, 5 days after having unprotected sex and is proven to be 98% effective. The drug is effective to any woman of childbearing age.
How to Use EllaOne
This drug is administered orally and can be taken with or without food as soon as possible after having unprotected sex to enhance its effectiveness.
EllaOne is available on prescription, meaning that you will have a chance to ask your doctor or pharmacist any questions. With the right guideline, it is simple when buying EllaOne online or over the counter. However, ensure that you get the right prescription before taking it.
In the event where you took EllaOne pill before your next period, it is advised to again use EllaOne and no other morning after-pills. How Does EllaOne Work?
EllaOne is used to prevent pregnancies after unprotected sex, and this is done by preventing the release of the egg during ovulation. In the case where the egg has been released, it then makes the vaginal fluid thicker to prevent the sperm from reaching the egg and fertilizing it.
In case fertilization has already taken place, this morning after-pill changes the lining of the womb to prevent attachment of the fertilized egg.
However, this medication will not protect you against sexually transmitted diseases. Overdose cases are very unlikely, but if it occurs and one experiences serious symptoms, call 911 for immediate attention. This drug should be stored at room temperature.
Side Effects
As mentioned above, EllaOne is an emergency contraceptive and should not be used regularly. It is advised that you adopt other regular methods of contraception, say, using a condom.
The most of the common side effects of this emergency contraceptive include nausea vomiting, diarrhea, tiredness, irregular menstrual bleeding, back pain, breast tenderness, headache, and dizziness.
The side effects last for a few days and if your period does not arrive after a week, take a pregnancy test. In case you experience vomiting 2 to 3 hours after taking the pill, a second tablet has to be taken. If you experience back pain, a rare side effect, you are advised to see a doctor as this might be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy.
Pregnant women should not take this pill despite the fact that it does not interrupt existing pregnancies. The EllaOne morning after-pill is not to be used by people with asthma.
