SanDisk has introduced the world’s largest SD card (memory capacity) SanDisk 1 TB SDXC at the Photokina 2016. It offers 1 terabyte of space for storing data. This is more memory than many laptops can offer.
Western Digital (WD), which owns SanDisk, did not reveal the price or the date of availability of the new SanDisk 1 TB SDXC card. But the very existence of this card shows how quickly the storage needs are growing.
Around two years ago, SanDisk introduced 512 GB SDXC which was the highest capacity SD card at that time. In just a matter of two years, the maximum capacity has doubled.
With its 1 TB SDXC card, SanDisk is attempting to fulfill the needs of the people who use high-resolution content and need a lot of storage for the same.
Dinesh Bahal, VP, Product Management, Content Solutions Business Unit, Western Digital said that their journey started sixteen years back when they introduced a 64 MB SD card. From there, today they are making a prototype of the 1 TB variant for the same. Their goal has remained the same over the years i.e. to innovate and get things moving in the imaging industry.
Why develop something like SanDisk 1 TB SDXC?
When Bahal was asked this question, he said that the SanDisk 1 TB SDXC is yet another achievement in this era of numerous applications which require high capacity storage options due to the high-resolution content that they deal with. These include virtual reality, 360 videos, surveillance etc and they are developing at a tremendous rate.
Apart from these, nowadays almost all mobile phones ranging from economical to high-end premium phones are offering 4K video recording. High-end cameras too offer the same. Red, a professional camera gear manufacturer is offering 6K video recording. They even plan to start rolling out 8K video recording by the fall of 2016. This means that there is an urgent need for storage options like this one.
This is where SanDisk is looking forward in helping the field of content development and fulfilling the demand where the supply does not exist. And here our brand new SanDisk 1 TB SDXC comes into the picture.
