Mobile phones have made quite a lot of progress in the past decade. We have travelled from old bulky phones to the new slim-trim yet ultra powerful phones. All the flagship phones are now water and scratch resistant, at least up to a certain limit. It has kind of become customary. However, Google seems to have done away with this custom in the upcoming Google devices. The Google Pixel might not be water resistant. “What? Google Pixel not water resistant!?”
Cannot believe what you just read? We felt the same way. A recent report by AndroidPolice suggests that the upcoming Google phones might have an IP53 rating.
Meaning of IP53 rating
The IP53 rating means that these phones are not at all water resistant. The manufacturers have not done anything to protect the phone from water. Though you can take it out in a drizzle to have a brief look, the phone cannot be used in a downpour. A splash of water is all that it will take to do significant damage to the phone.
The news is rather shocking because Google is making a premium high-end device which will be facing direct competition from its arch enemy Apple and the iPhones they have launched have an IP67 rating. That makes them water resistant and a much more sensible choice.
The ‘5’ in the IP53 means that the phones are not dust proof as well. However, it is safe enough to say that it is highly doubtful that the internals of the device will ever get affected by it.
Google Pixel not water resistant. So?
If this rumor turns out to be legit, then Google might have a hard time in convincing the people to buy this phone. They might lose a lot of potential buyers just because of this reason.
The lack of water resistance will obviously work as a big drawback which might hold many people back. If somebody is purchasing a $649 phone, they expect it to be good and last long. The missing water resistance does not really help there.
The Pixel and Pixel XL are likely to be launched on the October 4 event. Go here to read more about the specifications, features, price and availability of these phones.
