Water-resistant phones? Indeed they are common now. Samsung has already started to look beyond waterproof phones. They want S9 to repel water!
Samsung does not want its phones to survive water; they want them to repel it. It is a possibility that the manufacturer might actually make phones which will repel liquids.
S9 to repel water? How?
Samsung has recently acquired a new technology which will allow them to build phones which actively repel liquids. They have licensed a superhydrophobic glass coating which has been developed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
The glass coating a water droplet contact angle of 155-165 degrees, which in simple words means that water will literally bounce off its surface. Obviously, Samsung plans on using this coating across its range of smartphones, tablets etc. It is not very hard to figure out how this could be useful.
Benefits of superhydrophobic glass coating
- Water droplets can land on your screen but it will be repelled instantly. This will make it a whole lot easier to use your phone in a rainy situation or in case it gets wet. No need to worry about water messing up your display or your phone.
- The droplets will be repelled but they will not go alone. They will be carrying the dust and dirt on the screen along with it. There you go, a cleaner phone!
- ORNL further claims that the coating also resists light reflection. Not only that, but it also resists fingerprints as well as smudges. Looks like this coating does solve a lot of problems that the smartphone displays are facing nowadays!
Since Samsung has exclusivity of this technology, there is a high probability that Samsung will put it to good use as soon as possible. It will definitely give them an edge over all other smartphone manufacturers.
Though we would love to see this feature on the earliest basis, it is highly unlikely that the S8 will flaunt it. Perhaps, it will enable S9 to repel water or maybe the S10. One thing is for sure, it will take some time.
