Since the Note 7 debacle and its untimely departure, Samsung has been having a hard time. Now, they are depending big time on the upcoming Galaxy S8. Earlier reports indicated that Samsung might offer a 4K display on S8 but according to the latest rumours, that might not be the case.
Our latest leak (or rumour) again comes from the Chinese micro-blogging website Weibo. It states that the S8 will not have a 4K display as the previous reports suggested. It will stick to the QHD display which was offered on the Galaxy S7.
Why no 4K display on S8?
This is a little disappointing but if you think clearly, you will realise that it is a smart move. The S7 came with a QHD display and a screen size of 5.1-inches which gave it a really very high pixel density of 576ppi. That is more than enough.
Also see – S9 will repel water. It will literally bounce off the surface of the phone.
Also, the truth is that such high resolutions (QHD or UHD) are of no use on a small screen. We did write about it separately too. You can take a look at it over here.
4K display on S8 means 4K content on a 5.1-inch screen. It only sounds intimidating but actually, you might not even be able to notice any difference at all. Other than a very high pixel density, it is just a drain on the battery and affects the performance of the phone.
The only time where the 4K screen might be better than a 1080p screen or a 2K (Quad HD) screen is when we are talking about VR. At that time, you will be able to notice the difference between them because the screen is really close to the eyes.
However, the present generation of graphic cards are not yet capable of working with these two modern marvels at the same time – 4K and VR. So that knocks out the only advantage of the 4K screen.

What else?
Apart from the revelation of no 4K display on S8, the rumour also suggests that Samsung is dedicatedly working on its brand new personal assistant with AI. AI is the new cool thing and Samsung could not be left behind in the race.
The rumours point towards the S8 to have a dedicated button to summon the AI-powered assistant.
The previous reports suggested that the S8 will be launched on February 26. However, the latest Weibo leak suggests that the launch may be delayed as far as April.
However, there is still a possibility that Samsung might offer a 4K screen on the bigger (Edge) variant. Stay tuned as we will update you if we find anything else about the 4K display on S8.
4K display would be a battery eating monster, nothing else.
I could not agree more, Manu!
However, if VR is something that interests you, then you might want the highest possible resolution.
